River City Rifle & Pistol Club Promoting Conservation and the Shooting Sports in North Iowa Since 1968 May 2009 Monthly Newsletter
We are holding our meetings at the outdoor range. I would like to talk a little about the range clean up and construction that will take place the last weekend of
April (4/25/09 & 4/26/09) and the first weekend of May (5/2/09 & 5/3/09). Please volunteer a few hours to the construction
projects and clean up that will take place. We still have some important projects to finish up to make the range safer and
easier to use. We have to remember that almost all the construction and maintenance is done on a volunteer basis with donated
funds and materials. Many members past and present can pat themselves on the back for jobs well done - this doesn't necessarily
mean you have to toil away all day at the range - the work can be paper work or the time spent at the gun show working the
various jobs to make our show what it is today. After all, the gun show is our only fund raiser of the year. One of the most
disturbing things I have seen is a member coming to the range for a morning's shooting and forgetting it was range clean
up that Saturday. Instead of joining in and doing what he could since he had planned on shooting that morning instead of working
- he turned around and left. We can read many things into this incident, but the bottom line is we as members get exactly
what we put into this club. He could have met and worked with some very good individuals. Most every member has a place to
shoot - it is the camaraderie that brings us to joining the club. I realize many things can come up those two weekends that
keep a member away, but there are many other days that you can volunteer to help the club out - schedule one into your busy
spring, summer or fall and follow through - you will enjoy the range more and feel better about yourself and your relationship
with the club to boot. With that said I would like to outline the projects for this years clean
up and construction. The cement under the one and two hundred yard cover and a pad for the new sign in sign out structure.
Maintenance of the fence around our shooting facility, trimming of tree limbs and rock pick up for ease of mowing. Construction
of a simplified practice target holder set for concealed carry qualification practice. I would
like the membership to think of Bob Lauritson. We lost Bob last month and he will be missed. His health towards the end limited
what and how much he could shoot - but he still spent what time he could at the range. I talked to several new members last
year who were helped by Bob on their first visits to the range. He couldn't do much on the work days but he was still
there to help however he could. Bob will be missed by the club - our condolences to his family and friends. We will be shooting trap starting at 5PM till the meeting and then after the meeting. If you have never shot trap
this will be a good time to start - there will be several trap shooters there to help show you the ropes. Please attend and
bring a shooting friend it is open to the public. Steve Hays General Membership Meeting - 7PM May 7th - OUTDOOR RANGE Visit Our Web Site at www.thercrpclub.org Monday
